S1&S2 Reports For Season 2005 - 06 District Qualifier for the National Age Group Report by Ross McCombe On a glorious sunny day Clydebank S1's turned up at Cartha QP for the district qualifier for the national age group competition with very little experience but great hope. Things did not look good when they were drawn in a group with Glasgow Hawks, Greenock and Cartha, all of whom are long established youth set ups with all their players having played for a long time. In the first game against a big and quick Greenock team the bankies showed very little respect for their opponents and got stuck in amongst them tackling anything that moved. Greenock scored first but soon the Clydebank boys started to believe that they were capable of getting something out of the game and this was proved right when, after fine forward play with Jonny Crawford leading the way for most of the day, Fraser Campbell showed a fine turn of pace to race in for the Bank's first score. Soon after the flying wing Robert showed great pace and angles to take the lead with the last move of the game. Having hoped for respectability success was welcome and deserved replacement. With Cartha up next the chance of qualifying for the next round was a distinct possibility and after a great solo run and score from the irrepressible David (Jnr. Disco) Kirkwood things looked good. Cartha managed to pull one back but this young Clydebank team were not giving this victory up and again its was player of the day Fraser Campbell who ran in from half way for the winning try. The final whistle saw celebrations befitting the world cup itself and why not as this Clydebank team had achieved so much for what is a very raw and new team. The loss of the final game of the group stages and the subsequent quarter final against Hawks and Accies respectively were maybe a step too far for a tiring bank, but they never stopped trying and ended the day with a 2 win and 2 loss outcome but more than that they, the coaches and fans left feeling dam good about their performance.
